Tutoring Information

Center School offers tutoring to current Center School students as well as students in our community. We are pleased to offer both in-person and virtual tutoring lessons during the school year and the summer.  You and the tutor will determine a schedule, and the tutor will provide information to you regarding the lessons.

 Wilson Fundations, Wilson or Orton-Gillingham

Orton-Gillingham lessons are designed for intelligent children who are having difficulty learning to read, write and/or spell. The lessons incorporate multi-sensory techniques to teach phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, spelling, writing, and reading comprehension skills. Each instructor has undergone rigorous training in systematic, explicit, and informed instruction that research has proven to be effective for the acquisition of reading skills.

  • $100/hour one-on-one session
  • $55/hour group session (2-5 students)
  • Fundations only: $50/half-hour one-on-one session
  • Fundations only: $25/half-hour group session (2-5 students) 
 
Reading

Students will learn about specific reading strategies and comprehension skills to build a solid foundation in reading. Through explicit teaching and direct instruction, students will learn what to do when understanding is compromised. Specific reading skills are taught to improve overall comprehension.

  • $85/hour one-on-one sessions
  • $50/hour group sessions (2-5 students)

 

Writing

Learn strategies and steps to become a better writer. Students will have one-on-one help from the teacher. Learn how to include your own personal style into your writing and make your writing come alive.

Math

Students will receive support and guided practice in computation skills and mathematical concepts. Strategies for solving word problems and using graphic organizers in math class will be taught. In math class, students will also be shown how to use mnemonics to recall rules and procedures.

Homework

Let’s get the homework done! This workshop benefits students needing support in homework completion, organization, and time management. Homework will be completed or nearly completed during this time with skill focus on routines and strategies essential for homework completion. Focus and attention strategies, including snacks and short breaks, are included. Skills are explicitly taught. A small group parent session is included.

Study Skills

Students will learn study strategies that work for their individual learning styles. Strategies such as using index cards, mnemonic devices, and making outlines or study guides will be taught. Strategies using the computer will also be included.

Executive Function Skills

The lesson topics include attention and focus strategies, when and where to study and do homework, organizational methods and styles, agenda book & calendars, being prepared for classes & activities, after-school plans and routines, time management including long-term projects, study skills, strategies for managing anxiety & emotions, seeing and hearing what to do and how to do it, problem solving & self-advocacy.
