Center School has certified reading specialists in every classroom. Reading specialists provide expert instruction and assessment and, with their advanced preparation and experience in reading, they are particularly effective in working with struggling readers. Reading specialists are trained to understand the various components of learning to read and are able to assess students’ strengths and weaknesses, diagnose their specific reading needs and implement quality instruction to address those needs effectively. As leaders in the field of literacy, reading specialists serve as resources to other educators, parents and the community.
In each Center School classroom, two certified teachers team teach. Team teaching enables teachers to engage in personal interactions with students, allows more time for individualized attention and provides greater opportunity for observing student learning and socialization. Team teaching makes it possible for teachers to teach to their areas of strength and to model cooperative adult relationships for students. An added benefit of the synergy between two people is the built-in opportunity for reflection and professional growth; teachers can share ideas, give feedback and evaluate their teaching.
Schools Attuned principles and practices inform the faculty’s knowledge and enrich the learning experience for all students. In 2005, the faculty completed Schools Attuned training developed by Dr. Mel Levine and the All Kinds of Minds Institute. Schools Attuned is a comprehensive professional development program for educators that helps them gain knowledge of new methods for recognizing, understanding and managing students with learning differences. Trained facilitators on the Center School staff help to maintain and enrich the faculty’s understanding of Schools Attuned beliefs and practices.
