Center School places a great deal of importance on ensuring a good fit between the student struggling with language and the learning program. There are considerable variations in the way children learn. Center School’s learning program is geared towards children who:

  • Have been assessed with average to exceptional cognitive potential, implying the ability to succeed in a mainstream classroom
  • Struggle with language (reading, writing, listening, speaking), organization or math
  • Present with academic needs as the primary learning concern
  • Possess the ability to work as a cooperative member of a small instructional group and larger classroom group
  • Work with some independence and with understanding when given work at an appropriate instructional level
  • Can apply strategies to benefit their own growth and are open to new learning experiences

The Admissions Director reviews psychoeducational, neurological, and/or speech and language assessments, report cards, and parent and teacher interviews to determine if a student visit is recommended. During the two-day visit, the prospective student is included as a member of a classroom of peers, and his/her potential to function academically and socially in the Center School setting is observed.

Step #2 Assessment (215) 657-2200
Send Assessment cwolf@centerschoolpa.org

Enclose a psychoeducational or neuropsychological assessment conducted recently enough to accurately portray your child. The younger a child is, the more recent the assessment should be, with two years as the maximum time frame for older children.

The evaluation should assess the student in the following areas:

  • Cognitive potential
  • Information processing and learning styles, including visual, auditory, motor, memory, language and attention levels
  • Academic achievement, including reading decoding and comprehension, written expression, writing mechanics, and math concepts and computation
  • Social and emotional adjustment

Generally, if your child has been evaluated through your school district or by a private clinician, the report/evaluation will contain the required information.

Step #3 School Records (215) 657-2200
Send School Records. cwolf@centerschoolpa.org

Enclose school records for the current year and from the previous year:

  • School report cards
  • Reports, such as speech and language, occupational therapy, counseling, etc., that provide information about your child’s ability

Please do not send your application without the materials requested as we cannot make a decision regarding the appropriateness of Center School’s program for your child without this information.  A two day visit will be scheduled, if appropriate.
