Extended Day Program

Center School is excited to partner with Abington Friends School to offer extended day programming and after-school care for the 2016-2017 academic year. Held on the AFS campus, this program is open to all Center School students in 1st through 6th grade.

 Service Description/Instructor Fee
Orton-Gillingham or Wilson Tutoring Orton-Gillingham lessons are designed for intelligent children who are having difficulty learning to read, write and/or spell. The lessons incorporate multi-sensory techniques to teach phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, spelling, writing, and reading comprehension skills. Each instructor has undergone rigorous training in systematic, explicit, and informed instruction that research has proven to be effective for the acquisition of reading skills. $85
One on One
Reading Students will learn about specific reading strategies and comprehension skills to build a solid foundation in reading.  Through explicit teaching and direct instruction, students will learn what to do when understanding is compromised. Specific reading skills are taught to improve overall comprehension. $70 One on One
$40 Group
Writing Learn strategies and steps to become a better writer.  Students will have one-on –one help from the teacher.  Learn how to include your own personal style into your writing and make your writing come alive. $70 One on One

Math Students will receive support and guided practice in computation skills and mathematical concepts.  Strategies for solving word problems and using graphic organizers in math class will be taught.  Students will also be shown how to use mnemonics to recall rules and procedures in math class. $70 One on One

Homework Let’s get the homework done! This workshop benefits students needing support in homework completion, organization and time management.  Homework will be completed or nearly completed during this time with skill focus on routines and strategies essential for homework completion.  Focus and attention strategies including snacks and short breaks are included.  Skills are explicitly taught.  A small group parent session is included. $70 One on One

Study Skills Students will learn study strategies that work for their individual learning styles.  Strategies such as using index cards, mnemonic devices and making outlines or study guides will be taught.  Strategies using the computer will also be included. $70 One on One

Executive Function Skills
The lesson topics include: Attention and focus strategies, when and where to study and do homework, organizational methods and styles, agenda book & calendars, being prepared for classes & activities, after-school plans and routines, time management including long term projects, study skills, strategies for managing anxiety & emotions, seeing and hearing what to do and how to do it, problem solving & self-advocacy.

After School Art Center School Art teacher Deborah Kowalchuk will use the visual arts to enhance your child’s creative self-expression in a “no-fail” environment. Fun and creative wintery projects will allow each student to relax and re-focus at the end of a busy school day. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis with a maximum of eight students, giving your child a chance to interact with other children and on a one-to-one basis. Art projects include ceramics, painting techniques, 3D sculpture, and much more! $20 per person; per class +
$10 materials fee
